We had a great 5th Anniversary celebration last night here in Las Vegas; it was a chance for our members from all over the world who converge for NAB to get together....Much Food, Much Drink, and Much SWAG!

Since our main reporting focus here is shooting the booth tours, (which will soon be streaming from our home page and from Studio Daily), I've not had too much time to report in writing but allow me to give you a few highlights. It's Tuesday morning, and yesterday we started with RED, an interview with Ted Schilowitz, and a screening of the RED compilation reel featuring the work of many RED users; (I'm proud that several shots from my recent features were included), along with clips from Steven Soderbergh's Argentine, (shot in anamorphic 2K), and Gorrilla in standard RED 4K....All the work shown was amazing!
However, what you no doubt want to know about is the Scarlet, (which I have to admit was a surprise to me); it's small, as expected, less expensive than the RED One, (only $3,000!), but the most surprising to me was that it uses a 2/3" size sensor and records a maximum of 3K. (I thought for sure they would take advantage of the Mysterium and stick with a compatable 4K). Another surprise was the announcement of "The Epic" a 5K update of the RED one. As a RED One owner, I would have been a little frustrated that just when my camera was coming out of Beta mode, they offer a replacement; however, they will have a policy of allowing a trade in of the RED one for it's full replacement value, so I guess it's pretty hard to complain. I believe the cost differential will be more than double the initial cost of the RED One, however; (don't quote me on this).

And as Steve Jobs might say, "just one more thing", and something pretty nifty; they have also announced a new 4K Player/Transcoder. It's fairly low cost, allowing you to take media right out of the RED One camera, and play it out in a variety of outputs, 4K, HD-SDI, HDMI, etc. You could also play back edited material to allow screenings in any output your projector or display could handle. It could be a great way to see projected dailies, or screenings without the need for expensive playback devices.
More details and products from other vendors to come as time permits. Today we visit Sony...

I just wanted to add regarding the Scarlet, that it has a fixed lens included, so it really is a pocket camera. I don't personally see a huge need for it in my narrative cinematography; however, the small form factor could be very nice in an underwater housing, and in my experience, it is easy to mix resolutions and get away with a little less when shooting UW.

I should also add from RED that the long promised 18-85 is now available, and appears to be of much higher quality than the fisrt offering of 18-50mm lenses.
